“Our athletics should go hand in hand with our youth ministry. Sports well understood and practiced contributes to the development of the whole person because it demands generous effort, careful self control, mastery of self and respect for others, complete commitment, and team spirit.” - Saint John Paul II
CYO Athletics are a vital and important component of Youth Ministry and an opening to young people’s active participation in the Church. It can be an effective influence in the formation of a young person’s Christian value system and life style.

here will be 5 or 6 invitational meets this year. They will begin April 6th, and will be held on Saturdays. The season will conclude with the championship meet on Saturday, May 18th. The meets will be held primarily at Parkdale HS in Riverdale, MD. Once we have firm notification from the CYO office concerning the dates and sites of all the meets we will send that information to you. The CYO office is still trying to lock in a site for Saturday, 4/20, and to find a few venues in DC or Montgomery County instead of hosting all the events at Parkdale.
In order to automatically qualify for the CYO championship meet, a competitor must have one of the top sixteen times or distances in an event in his or her age and gender division. Also, the competitor must have appeared in an individual event in at least two of the invitational meets, and he or she must have competed in the event for which they are attempting to qualify at least once during the season. To qualify for a relay at the championship meet a competitor only needs an appearance in an individual event at two invitational meets.
The team registration fee is $90 and payment will be made through St. Andrew’s Sports Pilot website. An additional fee of up to $25 may be necessary for the purchase of a singlet for your child to wear during the meets. Participation is open to children in grades 1-9 (age 14 or under on May 30, 2024) from St. Andrew Apostle and surrounding Catholic parishes without track teams.
Register with Dave Luksic or Hugh McKenna as soon as possible. If your child has never participated in CYO events, a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate may be needed, or, if your child is a non-Catholic attending a Catholic school, a copy of the Principal’s Letter from that school verifying attendance.
If you would like your child to participate, please email Dave Luksic, at [email protected], or Hugh McKenna, at [email protected], with the following information: child’s name, sex, date of birth, grade, parents’ names, home address, contact phone numbers, email addresses, and parish.
Please contact Dave Luksic or Hugh McKenna with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your interest in the program
