St. Andrew Apostle School
School Board
2007-08 School Advisory Board Report
The mission of the School Advisory Board is to assist Msgr. Mellone,
our pastor, and Ms. Kilty, our principal, in carrying out the
educational mission of St. Andrew Apostle Parish School. It is
composed of parents, parishioners, teachers, and administrators. This
year we agreed to assist the administration with the Middle States
Accreditation report and to focus on our goals of communication, and
marketing for this year. Listed below are some of the key achievements
of the school board for this year.
-
Provided financial assistance to our teachers, through the Phyllis
Kritzer Schultz Faculty Support Fund, for a variety of continuing
education and professional development activities. The fund was
heavily utilized this year and we were able to fund 12 teachers and
staff in coursework and seminars that will enhance the education of
all our students.
-
Raised in excess of $12,000 for the Faculty Support Fund, via the 9th
annual PKS fall golf tournament. The event this year was chaired by
Nick Luketic, chair of the Athletic Council for the 2007-08 school
year. The golf committee did a fabulous job coordinating the event
and fun was had by all that attended the luncheon and played golf
that day. The level of sponsorships, hole sponsors and corporate
sponsors was greater than in previous years and to this we owe a great
big thank you to all the PKS Golf Committee members and sponsors!
-
Continued our efforts to communicate and connect with the alumni of
St. Andrew Apostle, including inviting them to parish and school
functions and production of an alumni newsletter. I would like to
recognize Lisa Longacre for her diligence is producing the newsletter
twice a year. She now has a dedicated group of individuals that assist
in the production of the letter. It was recently released and can be
found on the school’s
website by following the School and Alumni Notes links. The alumni
were also very active in the Science Fair that was held in February as
judges and consultants in various areas.
-
This year once a month students, parents, alumni and teachers
participated in preparing and/or serving food at The Shepherd’s Table
in Silver Spring. It was a great way to give back to the community and
have fun at the same time. To all those that volunteered THANK YOU!!
-
Coordinated the CFC/United Way fundraising drive and facilitated
direct parent contributions to the parish and school.
-
Worked with the Parish Finance Council to develop a tuition
schedule. The rationale for the tuition increase was presented to
parents at the February SAPA meeting. A question and answer session
followed.
-
The Communications Committee continued to work to enhance the
communication among all groups in the St. Andrew community. The
School and the Parish now have one consolidated calendar on the
website to view all the activities on any given day.
-
Hosted a dinner reception for our faculty and staff to say thank you
for all the hard work they do on a daily basis for our children.
-
Collaborated with the school to hold a Career Day for the children of
the school. The event was fun for all those that participated, the
students, faculty and staff, and the presenters. This year we had 11
parents, alumni and friends take time from their busy schedules to
come and share their work experiences with our children.
-
The Marketing Committee worked with the Administrative team to create
a new brochure for the school to highlight our achievements as a NCLB
Blue Ribbon School of Excellence.
These accomplishments would not have been possible without the
dedication of a few people that I would like to publicly thank. I
would first like to thank outgoing board members Robin Tomaselli, Tara
Roche, and John Vittone. The time that they each spent working for the
school board on various projects was invaluable. I would also like to
thank our teacher representative, Andrew Price. With all that he had
to do to acclimate to a new work environment, I appreciate the energy
and enthusiasm that he brought to the School Board. I would also like
to thank Peggy Mazzola for all her hard work and dedication to the
school. She will be greatly missed, but we can take comfort in knowing
that her warm and gentle manner will be shared with her new school
community in Charlotte, N.C.
I would like to thank our returning members for all their continued
hard work, Dorothy Primrose, Nori Limarzi, Dustin Watson, Tim Breen,
Curtis McKay, Angela Solomon, and our Administrative representatives,
Msgr Mellone, Ms. Kilty, and Mary Tull.
Thanks also goes out to Fr. Greg, Marie Holohan, Amy Ratcliffe, and
Gloria Hosinski for their sustained support. We especially appreciate
the contributions of other parent volunteers, especially, John Lynch,
Nick Luketic, and all the members of the PKS Golf committee.
Finally, I would like to welcome the incoming board members Karen
Bergmann, Lori Dec, Joseph Clements, and Denise DeVeaux. Mrs. Elesa
Miller is our faculty representative and I thank her for volunteering
to help the School Board. They began their three year term this
September and we on the School Board are looking forward to working
with each of them.
May God bless you and your family,
Respectfully Submitted,
Andrea Morgan
